  • John Lott, author of “More Guns, Less Crime,” addressed Barack Obama’s claim that mass shootings don’t occur elsewhere like they do in the U.S.
  • His points:
  1. This year France suffered more mass-shooting deaths than has occurred in the U.S. since Obama became President (508 to 394)
  2. In Norway, Anders Brevik shot and killed 67 people
  3. 3 of the 4 worst school shootings in history occurred in Europe
  4. Adjusted for population, the U.S. is 8th world-wide in terms of public shooting deaths, with Austria and Switzerland close behind
  5. In terms of frequency of shooting deaths, the U.S. is 9th
  6. The background checks for private gun sales that the President wants are already in place in Belgium and France, each of whom have higher public shooting death numbers than the U.S.
  7. Most public shootings in Europe and the U.S. occur in legally enforced gun-free zones

Lott’s conclusion: the last thing Obama wants to admit is that public shootings occur, sometimes in greater numbers than the U.S., where existing gun control laws are far stricter than those here in the U.S.

  1. Not that I’m doubting you, but what is the source for these claims? If I use this article to refute people, I may be asked to cite the source and would like to be able to verify these facts.
    Thanks!

  2. The only source cited is a book I would have to buy. Somehow that doesn’t scream scientific publication.

  3. ZERO citations so it’s quite untrust worthy…. Pat posted a link to a site where a few of the citations show up as errors…. aka fake citations.

  4. The Norwegian Shooting referenced was in 2011. The frequency figs are out of context and France has suffered two major terrorist shooting events this year, which means that shooting deaths in France are at a little over one death per day by shooting this year.

Chicago has had more homicide by shooting this year. Surely the title of his book ‘More Guns, Less Crime’ gives you a clue. The guy is another deluded NRA supporter who refuses to accept that gun crime is out of control in the USA.

  5. The UK hasn’t had a “mass shooting” in 5 years. It does have a rape epidemic and a home invasion robbery problem and Islamist taking over swaths of the once Christian nation.
